Catholic priests, pastors or clergy members are being held accountable for abuse
The families of boys and girls are reporting awful abuses at the hands of church clergy, institutional leadership, and other staff members serving in roles these children should be able to trust.
Because of the fact that many of these institutions knew of the abuses and chose not to report it to authorities, victims and their families are eligible to file cases in court for compensation.
Per reports, over 6,800 members of the Catholic Church have been accused of mental, physical, sexual, and emotional abuses to their young members dating back several decades.
Instead of facing their crimes, many of those responsible were hidden from identification and passed on to the next city or organization, repeating their crimes over and over again against young victims and their families.
There are a few reasons why now is the time for victims to come forward:
- The statute of limitations have been lifted in many cases
- Many victims are given the opportunity to tell their stories
- Church and organization leadership are more ready to reveal abusers
News reports demonstrate a definite pattern of abuse by clergy, church officials, and other institutional leaders.
While there’s no way to know just how many clergy members–including priests, monks, deacons, and lay people–are accused of abusing young victims, statistics are bringing the issue to light.
NBC News has revealed some of the following shocking statistics:
- Almost 1,700 priests and other clergy members now live with with little or zero oversight from law enforcement
- Religious organizations have revealed more than 5,100 clergy members that have been accused of abuse
- Hundreds of those on the list still hold positions of trust with access to children–with 76 suspects who could not be located
- The AP began researching nearly 2,000 suspects who remain alive to determine their whereabouts
The Washington Post Editorial Board reveals that, “Sexual abuse is notoriously under-reported, especially when the victims are children unaware, or not fully cognizant, that what they have experienced is a crime.”
Victims that were abused by these institutions are now encouraged to come forward for a free, private case evaluation by a qualified attorney, including the potential to file for compensation.
We believe that the young child victims of clergy, priests, pastors, and lay people should have the right to face their abusers and finally get the compensation and justice they deserve.
